Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
