The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
