EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
